best beginner home beer brewing kit?

Grant asked:

Ok, I want to brew my own beer, but I am a college student and only want to spend tops 130$ (USD) or so for kit and my first batch of beer. I have seen TONS of kits on TONS of sites, but I have no idea what is good for the money. I also really like dark beers so that would be great if you knew of a kit that included how to make a porter or something like that.

How difficult is it to make alcoholic cider at home? Is the process basically the same as making beer?

Deke asked:

I don’t drink a lot of beer, but I do enjoy good cider (Woodchuck, Strongbow, etc.). I’ve seen those “brew your own beer” kits at various places, and thought about giving it a go, but I would be significantly more interested in brewing my own apple cider, blueberry cider, etc.

Has anyone ever done this, and how hard is it to do? Is it expensive?

Texas Home Brewing Laws?

Rob M asked:

If a person was thinking of starting their own brewing company in the state of Texas, what are the state laws & regs concerning this? I had heard somewhere that a person was allowed to brew a certain amount of beer per year without a license, but I can’t find the reference anywhere.
