Would I save money if I bought Grolsh bottles for home brewing?
tooter asked:
They have the flip top bottles for 5 or 6 dollars a 6 pack. Mr beer sells 12 flip top bottles for 40 + dollars. They are cool and Amber color while the Grolsh are greenish color. Any advice?
Would the light from refrigerator hurt my beer in the Grolsh bottles?
I’ve heard of UV rays doing that????

the less light exposed to your beer the better, thats why most american beers come in dark bottles.
Grolsh bottles work fine and I use them. The plus side is having to drink the Grolsh before using the bottles. It depends on whether you need a large quantity of bottles or just a few.
If you want to save money and like grolsh use them, but if you are looking to by dozens of bottles and need them in a rush by them from Mr. Beer.
Good Luck
check the thickness of the glass of both types, the thicker the glass the better chance you won’t have any accidents of the exploding kind - not lethal, but very messy!
You can buy used flip top bottles at package stores for as little as ten cents each. You should replace the gaskets, though.
Don’t worry about the light in the refrigerator. It’s only on for the few seconds the door is open. And, if your fridge has an old-fashion incandescent bulbs in it, it won’t put out any UV rays anyhow.
I wish I could shop where dogglebe shops. At flea markets in my area, the going price for Grolsch bottles is $2@. You can buy an awful lot of caps for that. The main benefit that I see for the flip-top bottles is that they can be sealed easily. You can also reseal them in the unlikely event of not finishing a whole bottle.
Don’t worry about light from the refrigerator. That is on for too short a period to do damage. Do worry about non-refrigerated storage. Keep the bottles in the dark.
No UV in the refer to worry about “Light-Struck” beer.
Go with your budget for bottle choice. I prefer the brown/amber because they protect the beer better and look better.
